• John Harris

    Guitar, flute, lead vocal

John saw Camel play live many times at the Student’s Union in Cardiff where he was a student in the late seventies. It’s no surprise that Andy Latimer was one of the prog guitarists who became a big influence on his early musical development.

‘I remember really enjoying those gigs and especially Latimer’s unique fusion of Blues, Jazz and Classical influences channelled into wonderful melodic rock compositions’ recalls John.

After Uni John played guitar with many bands and continued to work in the music industry as a sound engineer, tutor, journalist, and musical equipment demonstrator. He worked with many leading industry artists over this period including EMF, Chesney Hawkes, Jean-Jacques Burnel and David Arnold. Among those he interviewed as a journalist were Camel’s very own Peter Bardens (then playing for Van Morrison), Alan Murphy (guitarist for Kate Bush, Go West and many others), Warren Cuccurullo (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons and at that time playing for Duran Duran), Mitch Easter (producer of the first 2 REM albums), John Leckie (producer of the Stone Roses and Radiohead)- and the band Marillion.

Currently John sings, plays guitar and flute for Skylines. He also plays original prog rock in the highly rated Retreat From Moscow and Rock/Pop originals with Stroud based band The Hawds.

  • Scott Hunter

    Drums, backing vocals

Scott has been playing drums since 1972 and has appeared in concert with many bands and artists over the years, including Jethro Tull, Mungo Jerry, Jackie Lynton, Larry Miller and many more.

Having seen Genesis live in 1973 at the now sadly defunct Dagenham Roundhouse, the progressive rock bug took serious hold and led him to explore the genre in depth - Albums by Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and, of course, Camel were rarely off his turntable for long back in those heady days of creativity.

Conversely, Scott was a member of the post-new wave band Moonwalkers from ’79 to ’80, signed to Gary Numan’s Scratch record label which, oddly, produced no records at the time. Pressing on gamely from this underwhelming experience he joined blues/tock band Against The Grain, supporting Gillan guitar player Bernie Tormé at the Marquee, which happily led to an appearance at the 1982 Reading Festival.

Scott is a committed Christian and plays regularly in his home church music group in Reading. As Cliff says, why should the devil have all the good music?

Scott has extensive recording and touring experience in the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy and Ireland and is delighted to have found an amazing trio of musicians in the wonderful Skylines. It’s a great pleasure and privilege to bring the eclectic music of Camel to life. Long may it continue …

  • Pete Kirby

    Keyboards

Pete has been into prog rock since his teenage years, often using 6th form study time to peruse Genesis album covers! A self-taught keyboard player, Pete bought his an analogue synth with his first month’s wages after leaving school. He has played in various bands and most recently was a member of the Progs playing the music of Genesis, Pink Floyd, Camel, Yes etc. In 2018 Pete bought a Moog synthesizer and this was the catalyst for getting together with the others to play the music of Camel. Pete says, ‘This is easily the best band I’ve been involved with in. The music is a joy to play and we’re a great unit. I love playing with these guys.’

    Pete also likes cake!

  • Tony Lewis

    WAL bass, recorder, backing vocals

Born and raised in Bristol, a 16-year-old Tony was inspired to take up the bass after listening to Alice Cooper’s “Killer” album. Starting on a Woolworths Precision copy, before graduating to a Columbus EB-3, his first gigs were almost exclusively comprised of the music of Status Quo!

A year at Nat West funded his first “proper” bass, a Fender Jazz, as he set off for Cardiff University. It was here he met Andrew Raymond, “Retreat From Moscow” was formed and Tony’s musical partnership with John Harris began. During this time Tony began his long, close association with Wal basses, which continues to this day. RFM played fifty or so gigs over the next couple of years before the chaps went their separate ways.

Back in Bristol, Tony played bass for many bands in the local area, including “The Big Outdoor Type” in the early eighties with Neil Davidge (who went on the produce Massive Attack), “The Kogi Tribe” in the nineties with Ian Matthews (now of Kasabian) on drums, and later Brazilian group “Bem Bom”, blues-rock band “39 Steps” and Jazz/Funk combo “Hip Pocket”. He also continued playing with John in many and various contexts over the years, including “This Heat,” “Big Silence” and “Cartoon Boyfriend”.

In the early nineties Tony studied with Joe Hubbard, trekking up to London each weekend for lessons. For a 50th birthday adventure, he spent a month at Jeff Berlin’s “Players’ School of Music” in Clearwater, Florida and continues to study whenever time allows.

In addition to Skylines, Tony still occupies the bass chair in the reformed “Retreat From Moscow”, who released their third album “The Illusion of Choice” in 2025.
